Jade Buchanan’s writing is as eclectic as her reading tastes, with over thirty erotic romance tales currently published. She’s been known to accept writing challenges from friends and family just to see their reactions and Jade is also a firm believer that love and romance are universal concepts, no matter a person’s gender identity or sexual orientation.
Originally from Northern Ontario, she’s lived in British Columbia and the Sultanate of Oman in the Middle East. Jade currently lives in Calgary, Alberta where she’s hard at work on her next story.
Julie: Welcome, Jade. To get us started can you tell us a little about what you are working on or have coming out?
Jade: Right now I’m working on the next story in my Broken Trilogy. The first book, Broken Rules, featured Jonah and Neil, old friends turned lovers that reunite in Northern Ontario because of the death of Jonah’s mother. The second book, Broken Silence, returns to their hometown and tells the story of a male nurse, Matthew, who falls for a closeted bar owner, Rich. Both Matthew and Rich made appearances in Broken Rules and I’ve had a blast writing their story. It should be coming out later this year. After that I have the third entry in my Wolf Creek series, called Hedgehog’s Delight. It features a werewolf and his lovely little hedgehog mate
Julie: How would you describe yourself using only five words?
Jade: Quirky, loyal, friendly, loving and a little kinky LOL!
Julie: I love reading the warnings on the blurbs for many books. If you could write a warning label for yourself as a person or an author, what would it say?
Jade: Warning: Reading this author while eating, drinking or otherwise being orally engaged may cause unexpected spewing, choking, coughing and/or general messes. Hilarity and general sexiness will ensue, including instances of ménage, male on male action and gratuitous sex involving cherry pie filling, anthropomorphic cats, and the odd duck, frog or hedgehog shapeshifter. Read at your own caution.
Julie: Do you have any guilty pleasures?
Jade: My boys! I have a collection of Barbies, GI Joes, Ken dolls and other assorted dolls that I use to mock up sex scenes. I’m slightly twisted that way. I have a number of ball-jointed dolls that you can move each individual joint, and I have a Tom of Finland doll with some very anatomical (although, not very realistic) parts. I even have a Gay Bob doll from the 1970s. Along with all of those, I have a collection of accessories, beds, clothing and even teeny tiny sex toys that I’ve made myself. It’s definitely a guilty pleasure! I occasionally take pictures of them and post them in various places for fun.
Julie: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Jade: I love to travel, and I want to see as much of the world as possible. In fact, I’m leaving for China and Tibet in a few days! There are so many great places out there, but at heart I’m a homebody. As much as I love to travel, I still want my home base to be right where I am. I live in Calgary, Alberta, and my immediate family is here, a large group of my friends are also here, but everyone/everything else is still within reach thanks to the internet and the closest airport!
Julie: How do you get yourself in the mood to write?
Jade: I’m always writing down plot ideas or new dialogue, but they aren’t always for the same story. So, when I start to write a particular book, I’ll go over all the sticky notes that I’ve written for it and use that as a springboard to work on a scene. It really helps me get into the right mood that I need for that particular book. Other than that, setting firm deadlines sure puts me in the mood to write! I think I work better with a slight panic
Julie: If someone hasn’t read any of your work, what book would you recommend that they start with and why
Jade: Hmm, that’s a tough one. I would probably say Wolf Creek 1: Black Wolf, because it nicely incorporates a lot of things that end up in my writing. The importance of family, quirky humor, offbeat characters and a little bit of melt-your-brain sexiness. Black Wolf tells the story of a werewolf and his little tabby cat shapeshifter mate, and they get into all sorts of situations. I think it’s a fun story, and I hope others do too!

Hey Jade, I love love love that you consider a “a little kinky” as one word. Maybe we should make it alittlekinky?
Good interview, have fun in China!
