Lynn Rush began her writing career in 2008. She has both an undergraduate and graduate degree in the mental health field and has enjoyed applying that unique knowledge to develop unique characters.
A former inline speed skater and mountain biker, Lynn has been known to test the limits of her athletic endurance. So, when she’s not writing, she spends time enjoying the Arizona sunshine by road biking nearly 100 miles per week with her husband of fifteen years and going on jogs with her loveable Shetland Sheep dogs.
Julie: Welcome, Lynn. Tell us about yourself! Where are you from?
Lynn: I’m a former Minnesotan now living in the Arizona desert. I must say, I prefer the warmth! Even the triple digits. I’m a wife, athlete, and chocolate lover. I just love getting lost in a great paranormal romance where the unexpected is the norm!
Julie: I was just admiring the cover of your book, Wasteland. Will you tell us more about that story and what inspired it?
Lynn: Crescent Moon Press did a fantastic job with that cover didn’t they? I absolutely love it. Like most of my stories, the idea for Wasteland just came to me one day. Sometimes I wake up with ideas, get one while sitting at the coffee shop, or just fussing around the house cleaning. But when I look back on my situation as I wrote Wasteland…I was unemployed.
Didn’t ask to be. Didn’t want to be. Didn’t like it.
David, my character in Wasteland, finds himself in a similar situation. He didn’t ask to be a half-demon, didn’t want it, and didn’t like it. His mother sold his soul before he was even conceived. And after four centuries searching for an “out clause,” there doesn’t appear to be one…until his demonic master gives David the assignment to procure young Jessica Hanks. She might be the key to his redemption. He just has to get past Jessica’s tempting Guardian…
Julie: How long did it take you to write Wasteland?
Lynn: I wrote Wasteland in about three weeks in December 2009. Once I get a story in my mind, I pretty much have to get it all out in a VERY rough draft (usually about 70-80,000 words) or I go insane. LOL. But the editing process took months and months. Lots of rewrites and lots of fleshing out. I didn’t submit it to anyone until nearly a year later.
Julie: Was there a character you enjoyed writing the most?
Lynn: I really loved writing David’s character in Wasteland. He’s such complex man—er—demon. It was fun getting into his head and getting to know him. I had kind of an idea of him when I started writing, but as I went on with the story, I like how he turned out.
Julie: Is music a factor for you while you are writing? Do certain songs put you in the right frame of mind to write certain stories?
Lynn: Oh yes. Music is huge to me. Anyone who follows my blog, Facebook, or Twitter posts knows that as well. I’m forever posting songs, video clips, etc. I’d have to say Skillet is really close to the Wasteland books. Monster, Awake and Alive, Comatose are a few to name. I love RED, Lifehouse, P!nk, and Decyfer Down as well. During action scenes, I like the hard rock music pumping through my earbuds for sure. Gets the energy going.
Julie: What is the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Lynn: I think writing a book was the most adventurous thing I’ve done. I didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming an author. Didn’t write for the school newspaper. Wasn’t on the yearbook staff. Heck, I think I surprised everyone I knew when they found out I’d written a book, let alone a publisher had picked it up and published it! I was always (and still kinda am) known more for my athletic endeavors. I used to be an inline speed skater, mountain biker and I now love road biking with my sweet hubby (though I’ll leave the Ironman events to him!)
Julie: What can readers expect from you next?
Lynn: Awaited (Wasteland #2) releases May 2012. Violet Midnight (Violet Night Trilogy #1) releases August 2012 with books 2 and 3 following in October and December. Wasteland #3 is drafted (very roughly) but I hope to present that to my editor in the next couple of months. It’s going to be a busy 2012 for sure. Thankfully all the stories are written, just doing the editing now.
