Empath demon Sacha Camomescro is rescuing refugees from Victorian Europe’s war on magic when she meets a man unlike any other. Javier Vargas stirs passion that her affair with Luc had never come close to igniting. Her gift is her curse though, and it is hard to get too close to a man only to be able to see his desires and know that her happiness is not on the forefront of his mind.
Javier is an alpha werewolf. His pack nearly decimated by assassins, his appetite for justice for his dead wife is superseded only by his newly aroused desire for the mysterious woman with the gift of empathy. His desire to trust again, to trust in her, is strong, but his instincts tell him of the danger awaiting. A danger that meant the death of his wife and best friend to the Disraeli assassins the last time he put trust in a stranger.
As alpha of the Avinguda pack, Javier must decide for the good of the pack who to trust to keep their limited numbers safe and his instincts tell him that boarding the woman’s ship could put them at risk of total decimation. When her ship is attacked it appears that someone from Javier’s pack is responsible, but there is more at play than appears. Putting faith in their newfound alliance is key if they hope to survive the betrayal that cuts deeper than they could imagine.
Sexy alpha shifter hero + smart and sassy demon empath heroine + creative and exciting steampunk world = a fun, exciting, dangerous and emotional read. Ms. Rhys has created a dynamic and sinfully delicious world with characters that made me feel their passion and emotion along with them. The curse that Sacha has to deal with made me really feel her hurt and loneliness as she accepts her fate and the “affection” from the least objectionable available choice. Watching as she finds a way to not only step away from that security and run into the arms of a man who she can trust and find love with made this book more than an entertaining read for me.
