An Engagement Challenge/Challenge Series by Kiru Taye is an engaging contemporary novel featuring an interracial couple. Paul Arinze is born and raised in Nigeria while Ijay’s parentage is part Nigerian and part English. Paul’s character immediately caught my attention because of the access to his inner thoughts. He is tortured by his past and it still affects him in his present life. He believes he was unloved growing up and as a grown man does not possess the capacity to feel deeply or love someone else. No one woman has tapped into this hidden part of Paul until he meets Ijay. His brother Vincent, on the other hand, is the personification of evil, although he did add an entertaining element to the overall story. The story is mostly set in Nigeria and while I am unfamiliar with the country, the descriptions helped in creating a visual backdrop that went far in bringing the story to life. I really enjoyed this novel and will be looking for more from Kiru Taye.
Paul Arinze is a food distributer developing the local Nigerian food market. His professional life is going well; not so much his personal life. He’s recently broken up with a woman he dated for a year and he has no regrets. On a business trip to London, he meets and has a one-night stand with Ijay Amadi. Paul is not into long distance relationships but something about Ijay makes him want for more. As his company prepares for a major launch, Paul hires Ijay’s PR firm. Ijay has mixed feelings about seeing Paul again because since their brief encounter she has gotten engaged. Paul is shocked to learn of her engagement but suspicious when he learns the identity of her fiancé. Vincent Arinze is Paul’s half-brother and there is no love lost between them. It seems Vincent pursued Ijay knowing she had an affair with Paul. For years, Vincent has envied his brother. He wants nothing more than to destroy him. Paul is determined to settle the score once and for all and not let Ijay be a casualty of their war, because despite believing he can never love anyone, he’s fallen completely in love with Ijay.
