C791 is Eve Langlais’s newest series dealing with what it means to be human. This novella is about cyborgs. Machines that were once human but now follow the commands of humans; commands to kill, to steal and finally, to die. One cyborg is self-aware though. An electrical pulse sent his computer into shock and now he can choose to obey or not. When an order goes through to kill all cyborgs due to a bug, Joe (as he now refers to himself) saves his cyborg brothers and inadvertently causes a revolution.
Fast forward a few years later and Joe is trying to find out where cyborgs came from and who was behind their creation. He and the other cyborgs have learned not all types of feelings come naturally. They don’t feel love, just lust. They don’t feel jealousy per say, but possessiveness. When Joe is caught trying to break into a secured military base, he’s locked up in a cage and has a constant stream of lab technicians looking to swab samples from him. The latest technician is Chloe, a woman with a mysterious past and a unique way about her. Despite himself, Joe becomes intrigued. What follows next is a whirlwind, erotic romance that deals with what it means to be human and how a machine can learn to love. This is Eve Langlais we are talking about so the scenes are plentiful and often vivid. The physical chemistry between the two is instant and hot, and often over takes the plot. But be warned there are hard truths that Langlais throws at readers that deal with PTSD, brainwashing and rape. This is a great first book, and I want to read about the other “brothers” and how they will fare when romance hits them unexpectedly.
