Convincing Symon by Em Woods

This was an extremely quick read (15,300 words).  The final pages were a sneak peek at another book (not the second Council book either).  While I love short stories and novellas, I felt like I was missing a ton of information from Convincing Symon.  Each character seemed to have a history that was hinted at or briefly mentioned, but never fully drawn out, so I was left reading between the lines and filling in gaps using deductive reasoning skills.

Lark is an empath. She’s running from her hometown because they use her to find other magical people. She was also friends with a man named Drew five years ago, and he gave her a tattoo.  Symon used to be on the Council of Magick, but for some reason is quitting.  There is an incident that involved his brother Solomon and a another person, Alex, in which Alex ended up dead. This is a huge unresolved issue in Symon’s mind that is making it hard for him to move on. Then there is Jace. He adores Symon and is eagerly awaiting their third, but Jace also hates the incident between Symon and Alex. He thinks Alex and Symon were lovers and wants Symon to move on.  Complicated right? Then there’s Drew… Oh boy, I have no idea what to even say about his character. Is he a villain? No, but he’s definitely an antagonist of a sort. He’s the one who lays the spell on Lark that starts the ball rolling.  He also has two male mates who he refuses to name and says it’s “complicated”.  I’m interested in his story because he seems to be a man of many faces and I hope the next Council book is his.  The end of the story is a cliffhanger with Symon’s brother, Solomon, calling. Drew says Solomon is coming back in town.  Again this is a bad thing, but readers don’t really know why it’s bad, just that it is.

Em Woods has set up a very interesting world. There is a lot of potential and I really enjoyed reading the steamy scenes between Lark, Jace and Symon.  I only wish that we were given a little more backstory or there was a prequel laying out the cards.  If you like magic, threesomes and a spice of danger, I recommend picking this up.
