Anna Lindstrom hates the heat, the piece of junk she’s driving, the fact she’s completely broke, having to rely on the good graces of her clients and hoping that her “readings” would be good enough to inspire generosity. Anna’s gift for reading objects has gotten her fired from numerous jobs. When the overwhelming rush of information comes at her, she never knows exactly how she will react. She had completed several readings for Liz Bridgewater due to Liz’s acquisitive nature and greed for antique and original jewelry. Once Anna was finally settled in Liz’s well-appointed parlor Liz presented the necklace, an exquisite piece with large rubies, diamonds, and emeralds set in hand-worked gold. Anna carefully reached out and touched the necklace, and was instantly transported back in time, visualizing the man, a lord, who had the piece specially designed for his young wife who did not seem to appreciate his devotion. The sensations threatened to pull Anna into darkness, swirling emotions that both repelled and drew her more deeply towards the vision.
Returning to her shabby one-room apartment with enough money to pay her bills for the next few weeks, Anna was irritated to find the sleazy landlord had padlocked the door shut in an attempt to evict her. Finally able to get into the apartment, she realized that after paying rent and car insurance, she had very little left for food, and was resigned to another few weeks of only ramen noodles once a day. Exhausted after the long and stressful day, she fell on her bed, and was immediately pulled into the past, clearly seeing the lord and his wife, and the presentation of the necklace, but as the dream continued, Anna realized the necklace was part of a set, with earrings to match. Upon awakening, she was determined to locate the earrings.
I felt sorry for Anna and her struggles to maintain the things that most of us take for granted, such as a safe place to sleep, a reliable vehicle, decent clothes, and enough food to sustain us. I could understand why her gift, or curse, as she sometimes called it, would interfere with a regular job, since she was unable to control the visions once she touched a haunted object. When you add in her sense of isolation and her abusive former boyfriend, I applauded her fighting spirit and determination. This was an interesting and exciting book, a time travel journey that I completely enjoyed.
