Senator James Monroe Buchanan is in Florida for a much needed vacation from his reelection campaign. He is suddenly captivated by an African-American lounge singer, which has his campaign manager going ballistic. James sees nothing wrong with dating a woman of color but his voters back home in Georgia might take exception to his choice of a mate. He’s always played it safe knowing he wanted a career in politics, but with this unexpected but most welcome encounter he wants Lark more than he wants a second term in office. Lark wanted a change of scenery from her routine in San Diego but she never expected to find love at first sight and in the arms of the most unlikely man. Not only is James White, but he’s also a senator. Somehow none of this matters when they are together. There is no rhyme or reason for their feelings but they are strong and propel them into a situation that ends up creating their separation. Lark might be walking away to save James’s political career but he is ready to give it all up if it means being with her.
The Politician by Marteeka Karland and Shara Azod is interesting in that it reminds me of an issue that is very common in the media lately with powerful politicians being caught up in compromising situations. James has a near scrape on a beach one night with Lark but he does the right thing. He knows his involvement with Lark might be a problem with his reelection but in all honesty his heart in no longer in being a Senator. It is an interesting play on Lark’s name because like the beautiful bird, she also sings and it’s her voice that James first hears and is irresistibly drawn to. From that point on he’s a goner. James’s cousins, Robert and Mason, add a hilarious, lighter side to the overall romantic element of the novel. There isn’t much background given about both men but I would be very interested to see their characters developed into stories of their own. I enjoyed this novel because it was a brief and enjoyable respite from reality and thoroughly fun. Authors Karland and Azod work well in creating a very creative, cohesive and contemporary romance story.
