Digimonkey Tips: Changing Download Formats

Digimonkey Alt 2

Digimonkey is a big fan of technology, and she loves having the ability to carry a huge ebook Library in her paws.  But all this portability comes at a price, and that price is small screens and buttons. That can make clicking the correct download format for ebook purchases a bit tricky, especially with paws.  Very hairy paws.

Once in a while, Digi will accidentally click the wrong format (oops!), which can turn her into a grumpy monkey. However, Digi’s good humor is easily restored because she knows that she can reset the download links for regular files, or request a new download link for Secure format files, and then access the format she intended to click on.  Really?  Yes, really, and so can you.

But wait, there’s more! Not only can you reset the links when you download the wrong format, but you can also reset the links to download an alternate format for a different device. For instance, if your Blackberry needs Mobipocket and your Kobo prefers Epub and you like to read on your computer using Adobe Reader, you can download all three formats (if the publisher has offered them) for the same book.  The only trick is, you can only download one format at a time.

The nitty gritty of changing formats

When you click on a specific download format link, then that format link is the only one that shows in your Library afterwards.  However, if you need or want to download one of the other formats offered by the publisher, you should be able to do so as long as you follow these guidelines.

  • If you click on the book’s cover or title in your Library, you should be taken to the book’s detail page. If you receive a 404 error page instead, the book is no longer available for download.  The format cannot be changed.
  • On the book’s detail page, you will see all the available formats listed directly above the Buy Now and Add to Cart buttons.  Check that the format you want to request is available.  If it’s not showing, then it’s not available.
  • You can only request one new format at a time. If, for instance, you want to download Mobipocket, Epub and Adobe Acrobat for one book, you will need to download one format, go through the process of resetting the links, download the second format, then reset the links again before you can download the third format.

If the book in question is:

  1. In a non-secure format (Adobe Acrobat, Epub, Mobipocket, HTML, etc)
  2. Still available for download on our site
  3. Available in alternate formats

…you can make a switch to a different format by following these steps.

Login to your account and click on the Digimonkey Help link, which will take you to the Digimonkey Help section.

Digimonkey’s here to help!

Under the ARe/OmniLit Tips, select “Downloading Alternate/Additional Formats” and then “Adobe Acrobat, Epub, Mobipocket, HTML, Microsoft Reader, PalmDOC/iSolo, Rocket”.

Reset links for regular formats

Click on the “Submit a Reset Ticket” link, follow the instructions in red at the top of the screen to Choose the title of the book you want to reset, then click “Submit Trouble Ticket”.  The download links will reset at the top of your Library and you can download the alternate format of your choice from those listed (watch those paws, Digi!).

If the book in question is:

  1. In Secure or non-DRM format (Secure Adobe, Epub non-DRM, etc)
  2. Still available for download on our site
  3. Available in alternate formats from the same vendor

…you can request a different format by following these steps.

Login to your account and click on the Digimonkey Help link, which will take you to the Digimonkey Help section.

Digimonkey’s here to help!

Under the ARe/OmniLit Tips, select “Downloading Alternate/Additional Formats” and then “Secure Adobe, Secure Epub & Secure eReader” or “Adobe (non-DRM & Epub (non-DRM)”, depending on the format that was downloaded initially.

Requesting alternate Secure format links

Click on the “Submit a Reset Ticket” link, follow the instructions in red at the top of the screen to Choose the title of the book you want to receive in an alternate format, select the format you want from the “File Type Wanted” drop down list, then click “Submit Trouble Ticket”.

Secure File Type Wanted Drop Down Menu

A request will be sent to the vendor for a new download link.  Most requests can be processed within 1 business day.

If you see the words “File I want is not listed” in the File Type Wanted bar with no other options, then you will need to fill out the “Notes” section of the ticket explaining what format you hoped to receive so that Digi and her team can contact you to explain your options.

Isn’t it wonderful to learn something new!!  And no more grumpy monkeys.  Smiles, smiles, smiles for everyone!
