Emma Hillman never plans her stories. She just lets the characters have fun and hopes the ending will make sense. It usually does.
Besides being a multi-published author of erotic romances, she works full-time and lives in Paris with a (nice) husband, a (cute) little girl, and two sweet but (very) loud pets. She also reads far too much as the postman (and her banker) could attest, but shhhh.
Julie: Welcome, Emma. Please tell us a little about yourself and how long you’ve been writing. Have you always gravitated toward being an author?
Emma: Hi Julie, thanks for having me. I’ve been writing for more than ten years but only thought about being published three years ago. I’ve always created stories in my head and started writing when I couldn’t find the books I wanted to read. I wrote them instead, which worked out really well!
I wrote Location, Location, Location for myself and my friends, then realized it was actually quite good. I wrote a short synopsis (the first one in my life!), sent it to eXcessica Publishing and got an acceptance email two days later. Suddenly I was getting published and I had no idea what was going on! When it became an ARe Top Pick, I had to admit I cried. It was all a bit surreal.
Julie: How do you balance family life with your writing?
Emma: Well I also work full-time so the balance is between work, writing and family. It’s a bit like juggling two jobs at the same time. I’m always tired but it’s worth it!
My daughter (she’s 5) now knows that if Mommy is on her laptop, it means she’s working. Although I do my best to write during the day if I can, or at night when she’s asleep. I’m lucky in that I write fast.
Julie: If you could trade places with a character in one of your books, who would it be and why?
Emma: Oh, that’s a great question. Let me see… Jade in Out of Control (Resplendence Publishing). Two words: Five lions!
Julie: Anything your fans would be surprised to know about you?
Emma: I’ve got 3 degrees (including 2 post-grad) and they’re all in Politics and Defense-related subjects. Yes, entirely unrelated to the world of writing or fiction!
Julie: When you’re not writing, what do you like to do to just kick back and have fun?
Emma: I read a lot. About a book a day. I always have several on the go, one for home, one for the train (I have a long commute to/from work) and one on the Kindle app on my phone. Right now I’m reading Explosive Eighteen by Janet Evanovich, Trolls in the Hamptons by Celia Jerome, Simply Irresistible by Jill Shalvis and Finding Paradise
by Abby Hayes. I like to switch genres!
Julie: Is there something special you do to celebrate when one of your books is released?
Emma: Apart from bugging people on Twitter? 😉 My first Ellora’s Cave release was a big day for me. I bought myself some clothes. Read a new book from one of my favorite authors. Went to the restaurant with my husband and daughter. I even got flowers from my mother, which was a really cute gesture. All in all, it was a great day!
But no, I don’t usually celebrate. I just go to work!
Julie: What’s next for you?
Emma: Next year will be really busy for me. My Grassroots Series (Resplendence Publishing) was supposed to be a trilogy but I’ve decided to add three more books, so that’s going to keep me occupied for a while.
I also have releases planned with Ellora’s Cave and a surprise scheduled for August. At one point too I’m going to go on holidays!
